Alan started as a youngster at Millwall before playing for Fulham, Bradford City and Darlington, making a total of 55 appearances in the Football League. He later played in the Conference for Slough Town and his hometown club Gateshead. Joined Walton & Hersham in 1996 and following 334 appearances and 10 years service was granted a testimonial. Alan was manager for his final two years at the Swans, appointed in October 2004 and immediately taking the club to promotion to the Ryman Premier Division. Appointed Kingstonian manager in January 2007, he won the Ryman Division One South title with the Ks in his second full season, whilst going as far as the Ryman Premier playoff final in 2009/10.
